Fall Turkey #1

The tom's came in this morning........I wasn't on the deck when I shot this guy but ............

Do you like my foot attire for "hunting" today?
I was hid out behind the garage on the gravel pad by Casey's kennel.

As you can see, I did put flip flops on to walk down and get him.

Casey wants everyone to know that she was very helpful in retrieving him......

Not once did she try to eat him.....
.....just wanted to be in the pictures!

Got him with my .22-250!

I even remembered to grab the shell!

He field weighed at 19.5 pounds......

.......not a bad sized bird.

There are worse habits to need supported, right?

This dude was fat.

The beard wasn't quite as long as the ones last spring, but still a pretty nice bird.
This guy's beard was a lot more gray then last springs.

Pheasant Hunting - NOT

Yesterday Bill and I went back up near the Hulm farm and hunted some public walk in area.  We went pheasant hunting, but, there wasn't a rooster to be seen (all though we could hear them in the sunflowers laughing at us!).  We did however, get into some sharp tail grouse right off the bat.

If we were as good of shots as Casey is at flushing them, we would have been filled out on grouse by noon.  (We didn't get there until after 11.)  Good girl Casey!  At least we are growing her up right on bird hunting with us.......Don't quit us just because we miss the shot!

Because of our lack of finding roosters we were still around to see the sunset.  South Dakota sunsets are just as pretty as Wyoming ones!

Opening Regular Pheasant Season 2010

Bill and I had the honor of being invited to a family farm in the northern end of the state for opening weekend of regular pheasant season (this past weekend). We had a great time and had fabulous hunting. Thank you Hulm family for including us!

Mr. Roy (on the right), our host and another member of the hunting party.
Mr. Roy was born on the farm we were hunting and the Soddy that he was born in still stands today.
I'm sure he could tell us ALL some stories!

The Mr. was home for the opener!

Bill, nearest, taking the shot!

Good girl Casey!  I'm quite certain this is a picture of the 2010 Bird Puppy of the year!

Look in the bushes below Casey, you can see the pheasant she is trying to retrieve.

Part of the group taking a break.

The sand hill crane migration is on right now.  Far to many birds to count......an incredible sight to see!

Look at the smile the Mr. is wearing....You'd think he was either proud of his puppy or his shootin'.....or maybe both!

The majority of the group after it was all said and done Sunday late afternoon after a VERY successful hunt!  I got my first pheasants I'd ever shot.
To say I had fun would just be an understatement!

Thank you Hulm Family for allowing us to participate in this event!

Ten Bar Ranch Training Camp

Casey and I were able to go spend a couple days in Lake Andes with her breeder over opening weekend of resident pheasant season.  We BOTH learned a lot and both of us had a BLAST!!!!!!!  The weather was REALLY hot and made for really TOUGH huntin', but at the last field we went to, she got really birdy at some cedar trees.  I sent her in and she flushed two roosters, 100% on her own!  We will be back at some point for some follow-up training, hopefully Bill can make it also.  Kyle made the shot and Casey was rewarded with her first bird!  Thanks Kyle for making the shot......I'm not yet co-ordinated enough to work the dog, pack the shot gun, and get the shot off all in the few seconds the shot is there.

Unfortunately, the only pics were back at the farmhouse after the days hunting was done.  My camera is just to big and bulky to pack with me along with all my huntin' garb.......Maybe it's just time for a new one!

No trip to the Missouri River is complete without a FAN-TAB-U-LOUS sunrise!

What's a new post without some pictures of Casey playing?  After all, the world is 100% all about her, just ask her!  Naw.................she ain't spoiled!
