We Survived!!!!

Along the Medina River on an afternoon walk.

As many of you know, we head south for a couple months to retreat from the cold grips of the north.  This year was no different, just a lot of last minute planning as no decision was reached easily about going, let alone where to go.

Once the decision was finally made, then finding a park to stay in became a challenge.  As you know, I'm always up for a challenge and mission accomplished!  Bandera, Texas bound...with a couple of weather hic-cups along the way, we arrived ready to enjoy the south's warm sun, warm temps, evenings on the porch, and all that Bandera has to offer.

And then it happened......  forecasted unprecedented weather.  Not only did the forecast happen, but we woke to freezing rain on Saturday that continued through Sunday, Valentine's Day, that later turned to the white stuff in the evening.  Monday morning we woke to 4" of the white stuff and a crippled township.

The sun rises over the river.
Our first daylight view of the storm from our rig.

Being from cold country, Bill and I are well versed in how to prepare for all of this and did just that.  We loaded the holding tanks on Friday and disconnected the water hose.  A trip to town and propane was topped off, full and ready to go.  Several trips to Tractor Supply on Saturday and we had my motorcycle plugged in, drains drained and heat tape wrapped around them, anti-freeze poured into the drains...we were ready for whatever Mother Nature decided to throw at us.  (Except bringing the generator inside.  We forgot to do that, but it did get brought in Monday morning!)  Neighbors around us...not so much.

No electricity (no worries, we have a percolator for coffee!) Monday morning and 4" of the white stuff.  Not exactly my idea of a warm, sun-filled Texas February.  Our rolling black outs lasted for about 36 hours and as it turned out, we never needed the generator after all.  6* isn't all that cold, relatively speaking, however, in this 100% humidity on the "river", 6* is more like -10* at home.  We lived through Pinedale, WY winters....we got this!

During daylight hours, we plugged the rig into the truck and ran it to keep batteries charge.  Homemade potato soup and biscuits hit the spot on a cold evening.  We had plenty of propane, but checked on it anyway, just because.  No propane deliveries.  Texas DOT won't allow hazardous material to run on "these roads".  A drive down to the depot, just for something to do and to get out of the rig, found an attempt at plowing snow; a line at the depot that required the sheriff to worn of backed-up traffic on the roadway.

Tuesday, still having black-outs and really, really bored, the kids and I went to make a snow man.  A pathetic little snowman.  But none-the-

sparrow comes in hoping to get his breakfast.
less, a snowman that Casey was really helpful digging at.  And the best snowman this park has probably ever seen!  Of course Ida insisted on a game of fetch and so it was.  An afternoon playing in the snow, just as if we were home, looking for ways to entertain the children.

An unprecedented Valentine's Day blizzard in the Texas Hill Country.  We survived!!  An experience these folks will be talking about for years to come.  Just another adventure in the life and times of Bill and Connie and the Mobile Snow Chateau.

The Medina babbles along its way with snow covered banks, iced over rocks, and cold it hasn't known in years.

I'm Already Declaring Them THE Winners

I watched last night's Vice-Presidential debate.  There was one person on that stage that prior to that debate, I had no opinion of.  I sure as hell have an opinion of that person now.

So....  I'm changing my party affiliation.  No longer am I an independent thinking registered Republican only so I can participate in the primary's.

From here on out...  I'm 100% with the Dog Party!

Won't you join me in voting the Casey/Ida 2020 ticket???

B1 Flyer Over

This past Friday, our local Airbase, Ellsworth Air Base conducted fly-overs as part of a scheduled training mission and to honor the front line workers during this COVID-19 pandemic.

I knew they planned to come from the West, but I wasn't sure exactly what the flight path was.  Bill and I headed to the Historic Ft. Meade Cemetary for what I thought would be an opportune spot....  The planes flying right over the historic Ft. Meade buildings with Bear Butte in the background.  Great shot I had planned.  It didn't quite work the way I had envisioned.

What I DID capture, however, was the two aircraft along with the flag waving in the breeze.  A patriotic site, for sure.

A Little Kayaking

Not sure what the rich folk were doing yesterday, but this poor folk was having a fantastic day!  Kalisha and I had some much needed "sister" time relaxing together on the lake and catching back up on life.  Life. Is. Good.

Life. Is. G.R.A.N.D.

Friends here visiting for a pre-rally experience.  A day riding the Hills.  Fantastic conversation on the deck last night.  A visitor stopped in for a snack.  A beautiful sight to wake up to this morning.  Yes.  Life. Is. G.R.A.N.D.

Mother Nature's Work

This view is exactly why we don't have window treatments on the East side of the house.

Just a little morning wake-up call.

Husband Appreciation Day

Well, I appreciate Bill everyday and I'm one lucky girl I get to call him my husband.  This one of my favorite photos I've taken of him, even though there are so many things technically wrong with it, I feel like it captures "him".

Friends for years before we ever started dating....  The smartest thing I ever did was answer that one question with, "Some day, yes I will!"  💕💕💕  And the "yes" will be 20 years ago this August!  😲😲😲😲

Cacti

We've moved south of Lake Corpus Christi for a few days.  This is a more dry but more humid climate as we are a bit closer to the coast.  Even after the few years we have been wintering in the South, I'm still amazed at how palm trees and cactus co-exist.

We arrived in time to see the large cacti in bloom, and in bloom they are.

Last 2019 Super Moon

When the full moon came up Wednesday night, it was far to over cast to get even a glimpse of it.  The next morning, however, the clouds were gone and a beautiful sight to awake for was shining.

Big Fish; Little Kayak

A cold front moved back in.  Yuck.  My last kayak adventure was several days ago.  This lake has some pretty good sized fish in it.  Many of them like to jump RIGHT. NEXT. TO. MY. BOAT.  And swamp me.  It's happened enough, I'm no longer screeching like a girl, but my neighbor that likes to go out with me does!  😄  Fish were jumping at the islands edge, so we parked and I was able to capture this guy.  Believe he is just a carp, but a big one.

Sunset in Southwest Texas

Seeing the sun for the first time in several days yesterday was pure bliss!!  And the spectacular sunset that started the evening was breath taking.  Here is the progression.

This heron brought my attention to what was happening behind me.

And when I thought it was over, the colors came back for another level of spectacular!

Visitors

It's been cold and rainy.  Yesterday the weather finally broke and warmed enough one could stand to be outside long enough to visit with the neighbors.  While visiting, I realized there was a heron down at the end of the cove.  We don't see many blue herons down here; the white are far more common.

It's A Good Life

Yesterday I enjoyed:

  • a long kayak on the lake
  • a cheery fire
  • a nice glass of wine
  • husband and "kids" by the fire
  • a beautiful sunset
  • and a couple visitors

But mostly I enjoy a grand life indeed....

It's Beginning to Look Like.....

The flakes weren't as big as they had been by the time I got the camera all set up and ready to go.  Still made for a nice shot.

2018 Portraits

Fall makes for such pretty photos.  I've been wanting to get a 'family' shot of us using the '40 as a prop.  I like these.

Family Highlights

It's been a busy summer!  As soon as we were back from our trek south, I took a temporary gig with Meade County (next county over) that kept me pretty busy for about 8 weeks.  It was a good gig though.  I enjoyed the guys I worked with, showed off the old truck to them, rode my bike out a couple times, and hey, the money wasn't to bad!

That came to an end JUST in time to get the house ready to celebrate Bill's 70th (Really?  YES!!) birthday.  We had a houseful!  Bill's sister Susie came out, cousin Charlie and wife and all their kids/spouses and one grandson. On our side, each of the kids was able to make it! THAT hasn't happened in a LONG time!  We had the grandsons also, but unfortunately, life got in the way of each of the granddaughters being able to make the trip.  All in all, we had 21 people in the house!  Big shout out to our neighbors that helped us house everyone with borrowed campers!

Last fall at the Fire Dept Auxiliary Haunted House we used an antique wheel-chair.  Well, Bill really liked it and I was able to get it bought, had it stashed all winter long and kept it a secret right up until it was time for the party to start!  Sneaky, I tell ya!  I think he likes it - Bill sat in it the ENTIRE week
we had company!  Chuck and Cathy had the fun t-shirts printed up for everyone so we would all match for photos.

Dinner for the party was an authentic shrimp boil, complete with sausage corn and potatoes.  We even did the 'throw down' with the shrimp!  Almost the entire 20 pounds of shrimp we brought back from Texas was gone the end of the night.  Success I tell ya!

After the majority of the family left, Nicholas was able to stay and spend some extra time with us.  Life didn't slow down one bit while he was here!  We went east river to camp on the river with our friends that raise the dogs.  While we were there, Nick got to help mend/stand fence, saw quail hatch, puppies born, caught a catfish, played with baby goats, tubed behind the boat, went to the dam museum, got some high quality shooting sports coaching in.....  I told you we were busy!  Back home here, he got to drive the old truck, 4 wheelers, helped out around the place which we really appreciated.  Hiked, hid from a tornado, shot rifle, and I'm not even sure what all else!  Bill were able to take him home to California so the adventure continued in the camper complete with s'mores lakeside.

Camp Grand-dad and Connie 2018 was a resounding success!!!

The End Has Come

Today is our last day to enjoy South Padre Island for 2018.  Though I am ready to move on, and begin slowly heading north, I will miss the sun, the water, the sand.......... our great friends we have made down here.

Yesterday was very overcast and grey, but I still made it out on the water for one last kayak.  No dolphins, and a huge smudge on the water camera, but a great time non the less!

Our neighbor Susie just after we passed under the Causeway.

Susie and I at the end of our great afternoon on the water.

This morning offered sites on both sides of the island.  The moon sets to the West as the sun rose from the east.  A pretty morning and spectacular start to the day!
